Eric Ambler

Information About the Life and Work of Eric Ambler

Author, writer, novelist.
Born in the UK in London in 1909.
Educated in London.

He started his working life as an apprentice engineer and advertising copywriter.

After the success of his first novel The Dark Frontier (1936) he decided to devote himself to writing full time.

His thrillers were an instant success with readers, partly due to a very successful formula, which usually involved an ordinary Englishman who just by chance becomes caught up in a web of international espionage,
Ambler would then add to this a fast-moving plot and suspense.

His novels can certainly be classed as early models for subsequent writers in the genre.

His many titles include
Epitaph for a Spy (1938),
The Mask of Dimitrios (1939), titled A Coffin for Dimitrios in the USA,
Journey into Fear (1940), Judgement on Deltchev (1951), The Night Comers (1956),
Passage of Arms (1959), Dirty Story (1967), etc.

During his successful career as a writer he has also written numerous screenplays, beginning with The Way Ahead (1944), etc.
