Please quote or offer anything you feel may be of interest to us,
Castle Bytham is a rural picturesque village in Lincolnshire.
Which can be found approximately five miles to the south-west of Corby,
The local church is St. James'.
This very picturesque hillside village can be found only eight miles to the south-west of Bourne.
Here you will find a stream flowing to the River Glen, a hilltop church and a huge earthwork situated on a hill above the village.
Which on inspection one can clearly see that these are the remains of a castle, which although little is
known of its true history, it is presumed to date back to the time of the Norman invasion of Saxon England In 1066.
The site of this castle in Saxon times is thought to have been ruled by Morcar a Northumbrian Earl, who did his best to fight off the Norman invasion under the rule of William the Conqueror. Morcar despite his best efforts in battle was eventually captured by the Norman's, Morcar died in prison.
William the Conqueror's half-brother Odo was to oversee the building of a Norman castle on this site,
which was to survive until the Wars of the Roses.
Today all that can be seen above ground is the large grassy earthworks on a hill above the village, excavations of the
underground stonework have revealed a large keep, a cylindrical tower 18-20 yards in diameter, numerous walls and outworks, which include water defences. Water for these defences would have been drawn from the neighbouring stream and local springs.
