Burgh le Marsh is a small rural market town in Lincolnshire.

Which can be found approximately eight miles to the east of Spilsby
and five miles to the west of Skegness on the A158 trunk road.

The local church is St. Peter & St. Paul.

The history of Burgh goes way back to pre Roman times. Many archaeological discoveries have been made in the area, which include Roman coins and pottery.

Burgh was once just marsh land, but with the use of drains and ditches the land was eventually drained.

Hence the original name Burgh-in-the-Marsh - later changed to Burgh le Marsh.

Cock Hill is a Saxon burial mound, which underwent some excavation in 1933 by students from the Burgh Theological College.
There is a dip in the top of the mound where it is said cock fighting used to take place, hence the name Cock Hill.

One of Burgh's most famous landmarks is the fourteenth century church of St. Peter and St. Paul.
Another is Dobson's five-sailed windmill, originally built circa 1813 and still in working order today.

The Railway Station opened in 1848 and closed on the 4th October 1970.

The cattle market was once a very important part of life in the town, hundreds of cattle would change hands on a market day.
The cattle market closed in 1961.

During the Second World War the town was surrounded with trenches and dug outs shrouded with barbed wire and camouflaged netting.
Road blocks were also set up at all entrances to the town.
A search light unit was built on Station Road, there was also a radar station on Orby Road.
Local farmers were made to plough up much of their grassland and ordered to sow grain and plant crops such as potatoes.
Farms were regularly inspected and should a farmer have been found incompetent, his farm was confiscated and put to better use by others.

During the war Burgh played host to a plague of rats which quickly became a danger to people and the valuable food stocks, these rats had to be destroyed, so as an incentive the local government gave 2d for each rats tail handed in, and in just two months over 1100 rats tails were cashed in.
