Boothby Pagnell Manor House is considered to be the most important complete
Norman manor house in the country.
This fine building stands in the grounds of Boothby Pagnell Hall.
So once you have made an appointment to visit,
follow the driveway of Boothby Pagnell Hall, park in front of the hall,
walk across the lawn and enjoy this wonderful ancient house at leisure.
What remains of this fine building, built around the year 1200 entirely of local limestone is complete.
It is presumed that the manor house was originally part of a much larger house
which definitely stood within a defensive moat, as the shape of this moat can still today be seen in the grass.
The house is the rectangular block first seen as you approach,
the shell of an 18th century attached wing can be seen at the back.
Entering the house, the ground floor of which is a vaulted undercroft,
the living quarters are above this on the first floor
which are reached by the restored external stairs near one end of the building,
the round-headed doorway at the top of this stairway leads you into the hall with the solar (private chamber) beyond.
Two 12th century windows can be seen in the south wall but the main four light window is later possibly circa 15th century.
There is a large fireplace which has a cylindrical chimney, which can be seen outside on the west side of the house.
Both of the rooms have aumbry recesses in their walls.
