Bag Enderby is a small village in Lincolnshire.
Which can be found just north of the A158 between Horncastle and Partney.

St. Margaret's is the local church
which built of local Greenstone has stood since 1407.

St. Margaret's church is very well known and famous for once being looked after
by the Rev George Clayton Tennyson, the father of Lord Alfred Tennyson.

George Tennyson known as Dr Tennyson was once the rector of Somersby and Bag Enderby. George who had lost out on his inheritance to his younger brother was then to make matters worse forced by his father to enter the church even though he had no real calling or interest in the church at the time . But George adapted well to his new life as a country parson and in 1805 he married Elizabeth Fyche the daughter of the then Vicar of Louth. They had twelve children ten of which were born at Somersby rectory,
Alfred Tennyson was born at Somersby on the 6th August 1809
he was the fourth of the twelve children.

Lord Alfred Tennyson first started writing poetry it is believed at the age of eight the subject of this first work was "The flowers in the Somersby Garden" which was read and congratulated by one of his elder brothers who whole heartedly confirmed that his younger brother could write and write well.

Alfred was later asked by his grandfather to write some verse about his grandmother who had just died. Alfred presented these well chosen words to his grandfather for which his grandfather presented him with ten shillings and said, There that is the first money you have earned from your poetry, and Alfred take my word for it ,
"It Will be Your Last".

Alfred was sent to Louth Grammar school at the age of seven which was a very unhappy time for him as he was beaten and bullied not only by the other boys but also by his form teacher. Four years later he returned to Somersby where his education was continued by his father. All the Tennyson children benefited from their father's knowledge and intellect as he was well grounded in all subjects such as languages, mathematics and the sciences.

Reading was though Alfred's main passion and he would always have a book with him even when out on his much loved country walks. The family is known to have had there holidays by the sea either at Mablethorpe or nearby Skegness. Alfred's love of the the sea and sea air would stay with him for the rest of his life especially the North Sea in very rough and stormy weather. Alfred would walk deep in thought among the sand hills between Skegness and Gibraltar Point and at low tide he would go onto the mud flats, here he could and would recite his poems out loud in the isolation of the east coast.

In 1826 Alfred aged seventeen and his brother Charles aged eighteen published their first book titled "Poems by Two Brothers" for which they received ten pounds, this first book was published by Jacksons of Louth. They were so excited to see their poetry in print that they hired a carriage and drove the fourteen miles to Mablethorpe where they shared their triumph and joy with there love of the sea.

In 1828 nineteen year old Alfred entered Trinity College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge he won the Chancellor's medal for English Poetry and had a number of other poems published.
It was also during this time at Cambridge he met his great friend Arthur Hallam.

But in 1831 Alfred's father died.
Alfred was then forced to return to Somersby and take care of his family.
Alfred and his family left Somersby in 1837, a place he was never to visit again.
( Dr. Tennyson, is buried in the south-west corner of the churchyard).

Alfred went onto have a book of poems published in 1831 which included "The Lady of Shallot, Morte d'Arthur and Locksley Hall". A volume which at the time was well received by the public but heavily attacked by the critics, this was devastating for the very sensitive Alfred and as a result he was to remain silent for ten years. Some of these ten years were spent in the Lake District.

In 1833 Alfred's close friend Arthur Hallam died while visiting Italy. From the pen of Tennyson then came "The Two Voices, In Memoriam and Ulysses". Eventually these were published and from these works he gained some fame.

In 1850 at Shiplake on Thames Alfred married Emily Sellwood his life-long sweetheart.
Emily was the niece of Sir John Franklin the famous Arctic explorer.

William Wordsworth died in 1850, Alfred Tennyson then became Poet Laureate.
In 1871 Queen Victoria offered Alfred a peerage which he refused at the time and ten years later was persuaded to accept. He then became the first Lord Tennyson.
Alfred died on October 6th 1892 at his house in Blackdown, Surrey.
Five days later he was buried in Westminster Abbey.

( A Poet Laureate - a poet officially appointed by a government. which can often be expected to compose poems for state occasions and other government events )
